The Promotion (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 at 4:48 pm

The Promotion is a 2008 American comedy film written and directed by Steven Conrad. A look at the quest for the American Dream, it focuses on two grocery store managers trying for a promotion. The film premiered at South by Southwest in March 2008. It was released by Dimension Films on June 6, 2008.

Doug Stauber (Scott) is the assistant manager of a supermarket in Chicago. He believes that he is a “shoo-in” for manager of a supermarket that is scheduled to open a few blocks away. Suddenly a new assistant manager, Richard (Reilly) comes to the store from Canada, and begins to compete for the same new job.

The movie describes how the two men fight for the job, trying to impress the management of the supermarket chain. The competition causes strain on their respective marriages. Doug is under financial pressure to get the job because he has begun to buy a house that he cannot afford if he is not promoted. After Richard arrives, it appears that he has replaced Doug as front runner for the job. But it soon becomes clear that Richard has disadvantages of his own, such as a past substance abuse problem and a tendency to make inappropriate remarks.

Don’t watch this if you work or have worked at a grocery store because it doesn’t really offer anything that true about that environment. The movie is strictly about the promotion and the two people that want it. I wanted there to be grocery store humor but there really isn’t any. This is definitely one of those movies where if these two weren’t starring in it you would never have heard of it.  It’s not that it’s bad either, it’s just that it isn’t that good of a movie.  The voice-overs are never ending and the plot is pretty basic.  I have no intentions of ever sitting through this again so I’m sure that you won’t be very impressed by it either.

Watchmen Script Pack (2009)

Date Friday, August 15th, 2008 at 9:31 am

This is a script pack I found online that has three different versions of the Watchmen inside it. It has the Sam Hamm draft from 1989. The draft by Alex Tse and a draft by David Hayter. I’m not sure which draft they are using because on IMDB it says written by Tse and Hayter.

When an ex-superhero is murdered, a vigilante named Rorshach begins an investigation into the murder, which begins to lead to a much more terrifying conclusion.

As always we are not hosting these screenplays, they are being hosting on the pirate bay and we are just providing a link to them which people can just type in “watchmen script” on google and they will get the same link so shut up everybody.

Speed Racer (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Sunday, August 10th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Based on the 1960s Japanese-manga-derived animated TV series of the same name, Speed Racer follows the adventures of the title character (Emile Hirsch), a young race car driver who sits behind the wheel of the lightning-fast Mach 5 vehicle. Aided by his family, which includes Pops Racer (John Goodman) and Mom Racer (Susan Sarandon), and his devoted doe-eyed girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed racks up victory after victory, but still lives in the shadow of his late older brother, Rex (Scott Porter), who died in a race.

When Speed garners the wrath of Royalton Industries, he must team up with the enigmatic Racer X (Matthew Fox) to defeat the ruthless corporation. Written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, the masterminds behind the Matrix films, Speed Racer replaces the gritty techno patina of that blockbuster series with a polished, brightly hued virtual reality. Though the eye-popping visuals threaten to eclipse the acting, the fine cast gamely makes the most of their green-screen environment, particularly the likable Hirsch, who won acclaimed for his decidedly different Into the Wild role, and Lost’s always-noble Fox. Adding to the movie’s giddy mood are Paulie Litt and his chimp companion, who provide comic relief as Speed’s playful younger brother, Spritle, and Chim Chim, respectively. While definitely a case of style over substance, Speed Racer is a movie meticulously designed to appeal to families and kids, especially the Spritle-like young ones.

This is a film that I still don’t understand why all the critics hated it.  It’s a fun popcorn movie.  Which is what I expected and I’m still not sure why the critics didn’t expect that.  Visually it’s one of the best looking movies I have ever seen.  The race scenes are all executed perfectly and keep you on the edge of your seat and the acting is good all around the board.  I wasn’t sure how Hirsch was going to be in this role but he plays it perfectly and this film DOES offer something for the entire family.  It has silly jokes for kids on top of all the competitive racing and a predictable but good story-line.

If you hate this movie then I am not sure what you expected out of it.  It delivered everything that I wanted from it and a little more.

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Friday, August 1st, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is the 2008 comedy film sequel to the 2004 film, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. John Cho and Kal Penn reprise their roles as the eponymous stoner duo, along with Paula Garcés as Harold’s love interest, Maria. Neil Patrick Harris also returns as a satirical version of himself. New additions to the cast are comedian Jon Reep and former Daily Show correspondents Rob Corddry and Ed Helms. Other cast members include David Krumholtz, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jack Conley, Roger Bart, Danneel Harris, Eric Winter, Adam Herschman, and Richard Christy.

The cannabis-craving twosome returns in this high-flying sequel that finds them labeled terrorists for attempting to sneak a marijuana-smoking implement on a flight to Amsterdam. Harold (Cho) and Kumar (Penn) have just finished gorging themselves on savory White Castle hamburgers when they return to their apartment and hatch a plan for Harold to win the heart of his crush, Maria (Garcés). Maria is going to Amsterdam, and if Harold can catch up with her overseas perhaps he can strike up a real love connection.

After a close call with airport personnel and a chance encounter with Kumar’s ex-girlfriend Vanessa (Harris) — who hadn’t yet told Kumar that she’s engaged to be married — the pot-loving pals finally board their flight for Amsterdam. Unfortunately for Harold, Kumar isn’t able to endure the lengthy flight without an innocent puff or two from his smokeless bong. When the plane hits some turbulence and the bong is mistaken for a bomb, the flight is diverted to Guantanamo Bay and our spliff-smoking heroes are detained by overzealous Deputy Chief of Homeland Security Ron Fox (Corddry).

Now, if they can just escape from the world’s most notorious prison compound, perhaps this hapless duo can succeed in convincing the authorities that they aren’t enemy combatants, and that Kumar made the mistake of his life by letting Vanessa go. But before they can prove their innocence and get the girls, Harold and Kumar will have to outsmart the dreaded Ku Klux Klan, contend with a particularly precocious Cyclops baby, and successfully elude everyone’s favorite debauched former child star — Neil Patrick Harris.

Stoner comedies can be good when they want to be and Harold & Kumar are one of the better ones, but thats not saying much. I enjoyed White Castle but was hesitant to watch Guantanamo Bay because I knew I was going to watch the same thing over again and I was right. Guantanamo picks up right where the first one left off and Harold & Kumar continue to get themselves stuck in crazy situations one after another.

The only problem is that Guantanamo is not as fun as White Castle. That movie had a lot of fun with its premise and the situations they got themselves into were funny. In Guantanamo they basically repeat almost the same gags and humor, but since we have already seen a crazy psycho Neil Patrick Harris and a redneck freak, its not as funny the second time around.

There was also a couple of uncomfortable scenes in the movie. There are scenes that are just horribly racist with no punchline. Most of them are brought on by Corddry’s government agent character. I usually like Corddry but here he plays a guy who just throws out one racist joke after another and instead of making them funny, they come off as awkward. You can’t have a racist character in a comedy who knows he is racist yet so stupid that he doesn’t realize that he is being racist to the wrong people, its not funny, especially after the tenth time he does it in the movie.

There is also a lot of shots of naughty bits and when I say a lot, I do mean A LOT, in the unrated version I watched anyway. Now don’t get me wrong, I think movies should be allowed to show as much nudity as they want and I don’t mind looking at it, but only if its used in the right context. There is a scene where Harold & Kumar go to a naked bottoms party and carry on a conversation with someone while the camera cuts away to all the naked bottoms at the party. The thing is, Harold & Kumar hold this whole conversation off camera the entire time and you just hear them while looking at a different woman’s poontang every three seconds. The camera just lingers on them like a creepy looking guy at a girls volleyball game. In a later scene, the camera does this again while two girls are kissing. Another second and this film would have been a porno.

I did find myself laughing a lot through the movie despite all the things that I did not like about it. Despite all the uncomfortable racist jokes, the uncomfortable lingering nudity waching camera, the voice off camera in every scene that always has something stupid to say and the final scene in the film where Harold & Kumar smoke pot with President Bush, played by a guy who sounds just like him but not even close in the looks department. This scene isn’t funny for obvious reasons but there was a part of it that rang true. President Bush starts talking with the guys how his dad is always pressuring him to do things. Kumar tells him that he can relate because he feels that the only reason he is in medical school is to continue the legacy. This makes Bush think for a moment and that is a rare sight.

The DVD features audio commentary, the unrated and rated versions of the movie, a “Dude, Change the Movie” version, a whopping 36 deleted and extended scenes, a couple of President Bush anti-smoking PSA’s, the theatrical trailer and an “Inside the World of Harold & Kumar: A Choose Your Path Experience” featurette.

You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Saturday, July 26th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Another one of the lame Summer comedies came out last week. Instead of Mike Myers, now we get to sit through Adam Sandler making his attempt at being a middle eastern. In You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, a comedy from screenwriters Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog), and Judd Apatow (Knocked Up), Sandler stars as Zohan, an Israeli commando who fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream: becoming a hairstylist in New York.

And that’s about it. This film doesn’t have much to offer and it’s not really worth your time but I know that many people will flock to see it and even more than that will love it. It is better than The Love Guru but not by much. I’m not sure why Sandler wrote this and even more unsure about why he thought it was funny. Trust me, there are way better comedies to spend your time watching.

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Sunday, July 20th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

It starts right where the first one left off. Harold and Kumar on getting on a plane to Amsterdam so that Harold can see his new girlfriend. But on the plane everyone mistakes Kumar’s bong for a bomb and then they are sent to “G Bay” where more comedy ensues and ultimately they escape and have once back in the states have to figure out a way to clear their rap and get back to Amsterdam so Harold can get his thing on.

If you didn’t like the first one then you should probably stay clear of this one. But if you did then you will like this one just as much. I watched the unrated version which I recommend over the theatrical cut. You get more jokes and nudity and ultimately more movie for your dollar or bandwidth. This is about the same as the first one as it’s more about the people they meet along the way to where their going than it is about them. Each of these people has something about them that H & K exploit perfectly regardless of the outcome. If you hate silly drug movies then stay away, but if you like road trip movies filled with nudity and Neil Patrick Harris then this is your movie!
