Moving Mountains - Pneuma (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Thursday, September 18th, 2008 at 11:22 am

Moving Mountains is a New York-based indie rock band. Combining emotional vocals with elements of post-rock, the band has often been compared to such acts as The Appleseed Cast and Thrice.

Moving Mountains was formed in Westchester, New York in 2005 by Gregory Dunn (guitar/vocals) and Nicholas Pizzolato (drums). A self-titled demo was leaked to the public in early 2006 and their debut album Pneuma was released independently in early 2007. Later that year, Frank Graniero (guitar/vocals) and Mitchell Lee (bass) completed the band’s line-up. In 2008, Pneuma was reissued by Deep Elm.

I first heard of this band in an interview that we conducted with the members of The Cast Before the Break and they said that they would love to tour with these guys non-stop but for some reason I didn’t ever get around to listening to them. Then absolutepunk just did their 200 bands that you need to know about and the description under this band was, “If this list were only one band, this band would be that band.” So I immediately check them out and dug it so I grabbed the cd off of amazon and I highly recommend it. Since I’ve listened to this, I can now hear the influence that this band had on The Cast Before the Break.

You will be hard pressed to find a more epic sounding album that came out over the last year than this one. It has everything you need for a rock album. Lots of melodies, a little screaming, epic, epic songs, and a ballad. Highly recommended.

The Sound of Animals Fighting - The Ocean and the Sun (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Thursday, August 14th, 2008 at 9:12 am

The Sound of Animals Fighting is a California-based progressive rock music group featuring members of Rx Bandits, Circa Survive, Chiodos, Days Away/Good Old War, Finch and The Autumns. The group was brought together by Rich Balling.

The Ocean and the Sun is the third album of the Los Angeles-based progressive rock band, The Sound of Animals Fighting. Rich Balling has stated in interviews that it will be similar to the Tiger and the Duke EP. The band has also gone back to its original number of just four: the Nightingale, the Walrus, the Lynx, and The Skunk.

This album is a nice improvement over the oddness of “Lover, the Lord Has Left Us” but it’s still not the craziness that was “Tiger and the Duke”. The album does have some really nice sounding songs on it though and this album is much more listener friendly than the others. I’m happy that they went back to just the original lineup and stopped with the collaborations so much.

Anthony Green - Avalon (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Avalon is the debut solo album by former Saosin, and current Circa Survive vocalist Anthony Green. It will be released on August 5, 2008 on Photo Finish Records, with a US tour to coincide with its release. Keith Goodwin, Tim Arnold, Dan Schwartz (also known as the band Good Old War), and Adam Lazzara have guest appearances on this record. The album leaked in it’s entirety on August 1st, 2008.

Anthony Green, no stranger to the stage has previously played in Saosin & The Sounds of Animals Fighting as well as many other bands. His current side project contains a collection of songs Anthony has written over the past 5 years of his life. Many fans have fallen in love with some of these songs year after year when they surprisingly pop up at impromptu acoustic sets in venue parking lots across the nation after Circa Survive shows. These songs are now finally being recorded and released together for the first time as Avalon.

I am a huge fan of pretty much anything Anthony comes into contact with. Whether it was the first Saosin EP, Circa Survive, or even the randomness of TSOAF I still like it. I was super stoked when I heard that he was recording and releasing all of these songs because I had had bootlegs of his shows for so long and really did fall in love with some of the songs. Unfortunately this isn’t what I expected to be released from him.

I like that he did something a little different with the songs instead of just him singing over an acoustic guitar but some of the songs just do not sound right. A few have a brazilian type of sound which is nice but at the same time it seems like there is too much going on for what you are listening too.

The big bonus of this album is that you get the High and Driving EP as well which as always been available to download for free but finally it’s nice to have a hard copy of it. You also get 5 other older versions of the songs which I like better than most of the album versions probably because there isn’t as much nonsense going on. The letdown is that he didn’t record all of the songs for the album that he could have. There is a couple very good tracks that he could have fit on here. Bad Reputation and Rips You Apart and he also covers a lot of songs live but I can understand why they didn’t show up.

Overall a pretty decent release and if you want to buy it I would do so soon because there is a limited run with the 20 tracks, after the release hits 40K sold; it will be converted to a standard edition.

1. “She Loves Me So” - 3:52

Dance Gavin Dance - Dance Gavin Dance (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 at 11:07 pm

The new album from rockers Dance Gavin Dance just leaked out over the weekend to the delights of a lot of people. I was super excited for this release until I listened to it. If you listened to their last release “Downtown Battle Mountain”, then you would be expecting some really rocking music with a little screaming mixed in over some high pitched vocals. But after their singer quit and joined the band emarosa(which I urge you to check out) they found a replacement who has a different singing style and different range altogether. Not to mention that the songs sound completely different.

I’m not against hardcore in any way but I hate it when bands make epic sounds albums and then the next one is hardcore because it makes the band seem like they aren’t trying anymore. Calico System is a perfect example of this. An album full of melodies and catchy songs and then followed up by a metal album with lots of screaming and lacking all lyrical promise that was there before. If you you liked Downtown Battle Mountain then you won’t like this but if you like Hot Topic hardcore you will love it.

The Rise of Science - Casey (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Sunday, June 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

The Rise of Science is another band that I think some people might really dig on. Their sound is that of a rockish indie emo band, but listening to the music you get quite a bit out of it. It’s not just a straight rock album, but the rock songs are really good and the slower more ballad type songs aren’t too shabby either.

I was looking for more information about this band but couldn’t come up with anything, maybe they are just that underground at the moment, or maybe that is why most people haven’t heard of them.

Check the tracks on myspace and decide for yourself. I’d recommend the second track on the album “Aware and Confident”. Now that’s a rock song!

For fans of: Circa Survive, Fiore, Settings

Tracklist:
1. And I Heard it Like Burning
2. Aware and Confident

6. Teenage Martyr

Emarosa - Relativity (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Saturday, June 21st, 2008 at 5:49 pm

Relativity is Emarosa’s second release and first full length album. It will be released July 8, 2008. Most of you probably know a little about this band even if the name doesn’t strike you because they have Jonny Craig on vocals and it seems like everyone knows about the nice letter that Dance Gavin Dance wrote about him “quitting” the band last year. Well he has moved on to a new band and hopefully cleaned up a little bit along the way. I really have to wonder if he was just making his way back home from New Jersey and made it as far as Kentucky and was like “Hey, sure I’ll be in your band.” Regardless of how he got there, they have made a pretty nice little album.

Sure it’s easy to just say imagine Dance Gavin Dance without the screaming but it is more than that. The songs on this album feel really powerful and epic. Which I think his voice gives off that powerful element the way he belts out those lyrics. But the band around him knows how to cater to his voice perfectly and this album is definitely going to be getting some great reviews from critics. I know I’m about half-way through my second listen and I’m digging it a lot.

Tracklist:
1. The Past Should Stay Dead
2. Just Another Marionette
3. What’s a Clock Without the Batteries?
4. Heads or Tails? Real or Not?
5. Even Bad Men Love Their Mothers
6. Her Advice Cost Us A Life
7. Set It Off Like Napalm
8. Sailing in the Dark Isn’t Smart Kid!
9. Pretend. Release. The Close
10. It’s Cold in the Shade, Let’s Move to the Sun…

Coldplay - Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008)
Our Rating:

Date Friday, June 6th, 2008 at 5:49 pm

The newest album by those oh so unoriginal boys Coldplay has leaked and I gotta say, it’s the most original outing that they have to offer so far. Their first album since 2005’s X&Y is greatly influenced by Hispanic music and was also recorded largely in churches and other areas throughout Latin America and Spain. This is probably their most unlikely album to be a commercial hit but the music is more unique and you get more out of one listen than you are used to getting from this band. Each song as it’s own flavor and none of them are really bad so to say. The most commercial song is already being used in commercials and ads, “Viva la Vida” is the most upbeat song on the album and it makes perfect sense that it’s the new iTunes song. The first single from the album was “Violet Hill” and it showcases off the new Coldplay sound quite well. Give it a listen and see if you’re interested in the rest.

Track-list:
“Life in Technicolor” - 2:29
“Cemeteries of London” - 3:21
“Lost!” - 3:55
“42″ - 3:57
“Lovers in Japan”/”Reign of Love” - 6:51
“Yes” - 7:06
“Chinese Sleep Chant” (hidden track)
“Viva la Vida” – 4:04
“Violet Hill” – 3:50
“Strawberry Swing” - 4:08
“Death and All His Friends” - 6:18
“The Escapist” (hidden track)
